Science Fair - January 20, 2011

This year's exhibits will be at the Northwest Hills United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 7050 Village Center Drive. The FLC building is one block east of Murchison and has the bell tower and is next to the main sanctuary across from the HEB at Village Center and Far West.

Note:  Only 7th and 8th graders will be presenting their projects at the Science Fair.  6th graders who do a project will present to their classes.

Winners of the Murchison Science Fair compete in the Austin Energy’s Regional Science Fair which is held in February 23 to 26 at the Palmer Events Center. That science fair also needs many volunteers to help judge, etc.; training sessions for volunteers and judges begin in late January and continue into February. For details, visit http://www.sciencefest.org/.

Schedule

8am - Fair set-up at NW Hills United Methodist Church, Family Life
9am - Students start bringing projects to Family Life Center (grade by grade)
11am - Judging begins (judges arrive starting 10:45)*
12pm - Tallying scores begins
4pm - Fair open to public
6pm - Awards Presented
7pm - Fair closes (students take projects home)

*Judging continues until all projects have been judged; it must end by 3:00 so students can return to school to get ready to leave for the day.

Volunteer Opportunities

Judges - Judges (3 per project) review the displays and talk to the students, who must explain their projects. Then the judges assign 1-5 points to a set of questions. Projects are assigned categories ( e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Plant Science) by the teachers. Depending on the number of projects in a category, judges may or may not review all the projects in a category. No scientific background or prior judging experience is needed.
We understand that some people who want to judge cannot stay the entire time. We ask that judges allow at least 2 hours and arrive between 11:00am and 1:00pm.

Tallying - All judges' scores are totaled by two people. The final scores for each project are recorded; these determine the winners in each category. Tallying begins around noon and continues until it is done .

Setup - Setup volunteers arrange the tables etc. in the room and escort the students and their projects from the school across the street to the fair room.  Some early setup is done the evening before the fair.
