Mentor Program

Murchison Middle School needs adult volunteers to serve as mentors to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Each mentor meets weekly with a student at the school during the student's 30 minute lunch period. These students look forward to this special one-on-one meeting time with their mentor.

The Murchison Mentor program serves 75-100 students each year. The students ask to be in the program and their parents give written permission for their participation. Volunteers are screened by AISD and trained by the school. The student and mentor always stay at the school, using their time together to talk and listen, eat lunch and possibly discuss homework or play a board game. Some squeeze in a walk around the track or play catch with a football.

While the needs of students differ, all benefit from a caring adult who sets a good example by showing up on time, who listens, who focuses on the students strengths and who remembers the little things about the life the student leads. Some mentor-mentee relationships last more than one year, but others end when either party moves away, or at the end of the school year.

The 2-hour training for new mentors will likely occur the end of August and again in September so that we can match up volunteers with students sooner rather than later! Mentors make a huge difference--being one is very rewarding and having one can be life changing.

If you are interested in mentoring a student at Murchison, please email the Mentor Program Committee Chair. Thank you!
